The short answer
Curtain bangs suit you if you want a fringe that does not commit you to one. They soften a high forehead, frame the cheekbones, and grow out into layers instead of into an awkward stage. They suit round, oval, heart, square and long faces, which is nearly everyone.
The only way they go wrong is length. Bangs that are too short for your face shape add width at the wrong place. Get the length right and there is very little downside.
What curtain bangs actually are
Curtain bangs are a fringe parted in the middle, with each side cut longer toward the outside and swept away from the face. The shortest point is at the part, usually around the eyebrow or the bridge of the nose. The longest point is at the outer edge, usually at the cheekbone or the jaw. They open like curtains, which is the name.
They are cut with the hair parted, so they never fall as one straight line. This is what makes them forgiving. A blunt fringe shows every uneven day. Curtain bangs look intentional even when they are not.
Face shapes and the length that works
- Round face. Long curtain bangs, ending at the cheekbone or below. The diagonal lines add length. Avoid short ones.
- Heart face. Medium length, ending at the cheekbone. They cover the sides of a wide forehead and add softness at the top.
- Square face. Medium to long, and soft. The sweep takes the edge off the forehead’s hard line. Ask for wispy, not heavy.
- Long or oblong face. Shorter curtain bangs, parted narrow, ending around the eyebrow. They cut the length of the face visibly.
- Oval face. Any length. Pick by hair type.
- Diamond face. Medium length, parted wide. They add width at the forehead, which is narrow on a diamond face.

Say “curtain bangs” and then add two things:
- Where the shortest point should fall. Eyebrow, bridge of the nose or cheekbone.
- Where the longest point should end. Cheekbone or jaw.
Ask the stylist to cut them dry and with your hair parted the way you actually wear it. Bangs cut on a centre part and worn on a side part fall wrong every morning.
