The short answer
The best long haircuts for curly hair are all layered, all cut dry, and all leave the length past the shoulders. The shag, the wolf cut, the layered long cut and face-framing layers each do the same job in a different amount: they take weight out of the ends and lift the crown, which is what turns a curly triangle into a curly shape.
The worst haircut for curly hair is one length with no layers. It is also the most common one, because stylists trained on straight hair cut curls the same way.
Why curly hair needs a different cut
Straight hair falls. Curly hair springs. A straight one-length cut hangs as a sheet and looks fine. A curly one-length cut stacks all its weight at the bottom, flattens at the top and fans out into a triangle.
The fix is the same every time: layers that start high enough to lift the crown and remove enough from the ends to let the curls move. How high and how much depends on the curl pattern. Looser curls can take longer layers. Tighter curls need shorter layers to lift at all.
The cuts that work
Layered long curls
Long layers cut dry, starting around the jaw, with the length kept at the collarbone or below. The layers remove the triangle and let each curl sit on its own. This is the safest curly cut, and the one to start with if you have never had layers.
The curly shag
Layers from the crown down, cut for texture, with a sheer fringe or curtain bangs. On curly hair the shag gives the most volume at the top and the most definition through the length. It needs a stylist who cuts curl by curl. When it is done well it is the best curly cut there is.
The curly wolf cut
Short layers at the crown, long length at the back, curtain bangs. On curly hair the crown layers spring up into real height, so ask for them to be left longer than the photo you show. Best on looser curls. On tight curls the crown can get too short.
Face-framing layers only
Layers around the face, with the rest of the hair one length. This is the smallest change that fixes the worst part of the triangle. It suits women who want to keep every bit of thickness at the back.
Face shapes
- Round. Layers that start below the chin, with height at the crown. Avoid width at the cheeks.
- Square. Soft layers around the jaw. Curls at the jaw do the softening for you.
- Heart. Layers that add fullness at the jaw, with curtain bangs.
- Long. Width at the sides, less at the crown. A curly shag with side volume works well.
- Oval. Anything.
What to ask for at the salon
Say “dry cut, layers, no thinning shears, no razor”, then say where you want the shortest layer to land once the hair is dry. Point at it. Say the length you want to keep at the back, and say it dry, not wet.
Go to the salon with your hair dry and styled the way you usually wear it. A stylist cannot cut for a curl pattern they cannot see.
The regret test
The slider at the top of this page shows one woman in one bathroom mirror. Only the hair changes. Her before is one-length curls with a triangle shape. Her after is the same curls with layers: the crown is lifted, the sides are lighter, the length is the same. Same face, same mirror, same light.
The HaircutAI app does this with your own selfie. It reads your face shape, shows a layered curly cut on your own head, and puts it next to your hair now. You can try the shag, the wolf cut and plain layers before a single curl is cut.
